Project Management Office: The PMO is a central group within either IT or the Business that is chartered with developing and supporting the various project managers, monitoring their progress or their projects, establishing standards and mechanisms for managing and controlling project scope, reporting to senior management on project status, and preparing financial reports for Earned Value evaluation and SOP 98-1 capitalization. We have considerable experience in establishing and operating such groups. If your Strategic Plan has resulted in a number of interrelated projects, then a PMO is a necessary component of success. A System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) is a standard methodological framework to be used by all projects in organizing their projects, developing their cost estimates, tracking their progress, and preparing their deliverables. There are many different varieties of SDLC depending on the character of the organization, and we can help you structure a methodology that best suits your development shop, your company, and your industry. Click here to view or download a presentation we prepared on this subject, for the 2005 Annual Symposium of the New Jersey PMI chapter. The presentation is in PDF format, and requires that Adobe Acrobat Reader to be installed on your PC. If you do not have Adobe Acrobat Reader installed on your PC, please go to the Adobe Acrobat web site and download Acrobat Reader for free. These two concepts (PMO and SDLC) are closely linked, and we have considerable experience in assisting companies with both, including training your staff in these disciplines. Key Benefits
Our ProcessFirst, we would do a Methodology & Management Assessment (MMA) to determine your current SDLC and Project Management practices, procedures, and level of sophistication. This Assessment would identify areas in which you are in good shape, for which the PMO will merely affirm those existing practices, and may also identify areas in which special assistance is needed. Based on the results of the Assessment, we would develop a Proposed Implementation Plan (PIP) for the form, structure, and mission of your PMO. We would then work with you to develop the Methodology (SDLC), select the Project Management toolset, and develop the plan to introduce the changes into the workplace and train the staff in the new tools, if any. Lastly, we could work with you either to implement this plan ourselves or to hire employees to staff the PMO and implement the plan. Of course, you can engage us to complete any or all of these steps.
