Interim CIO/CTO: On occasion, a company unexpectedly finds itself without a CIO or CTO.  This situation is both a problem and an opportunity --  a problem because you need the executive leadership for your IT or Technology group, but also an opportunity to effect change in the organization.

In order to fill the executive void, probably the worst solution is to give an internal person "acting" powers until the "real" one can be found.  This approach is filled with political, organizational, and emotional pitfalls, both for the person temporarily elevated to this position and for those who were passed over for this "honor".   An independent Interim, who expects to be short-term, is a much better answer to this problem, providing a neutral third party who will defuse the political repercussions while continuing to move the IT strategy forward -- possibly in new directions that would not be possible for a more permanent staff member!

An ITR Interim can bring C-level experience to the task, can tap our team of other senior consultants to effect change, and provide a stronger, more stable environment for the new executive.  The Interim CIO/CTO can also participate actively, without rancor, in the search, interviewing, and hiring process.

Our Process

The Interim CIO or CTO, augmented as needed by other ITR senior staff, will review your existing operations, discuss and implement changes, work to hire the permanent replacement, and ensure a smooth transition to your new IT leadership.

Assess Technology
Our Interim's first task will be to do a Technology Assessment of your IT organization.  Within a very brief period, typically about two weeks, we will review the state of your networks, hardware, systems, procedures, and staff, and develop a series of recommendations for both short-term productivity hits and longer-term efficiency initiatives.
Implement Improvements
Following the Assessment, the Interim will work with your remaining IT management and senior corporate management to determine the best way to implement the recommendations of the Assessment.  We can provide additional expertise to support this effort, if needed, in areas from lifecycle methodology to data center operations.
Hire Replacement
Probably the most important task of the Interim could be to participate in the hiring of the permanent replacement.  The Interim can participate at any level you choose, from coordinating the actual search down to merely being part of the interviewing process.
Ensure Transition
The Interim's final task is to ensure a smooth transition to the permanent replacement.  Over some pre-defined period, the Interim can be available either on-site or off-site to provide background information to the new hire on staff, projects, business, etc.  The Interim will then depart, providing a clear and unobstructed path for the new executive.
